User Manual V. 1.1
1. Introduction
1.1 Product Overview
The SE5002D Ethernet Serial device server acts as a gateway between Ethernet (TCP/UDP)
and RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 communications. The information transmitted by SE5002D is
transparent to both host computers (Ethernet) and serial devices (RS-232/RS-422/RS-485).
Data coming from the Ethernet is sent to the designated RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 port and
data received from RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 port is sent to the Ethernet transparently allowing
bidirectional communication.
In the computer-aided manufacturing or industrial automation areas, SE5002D is used by field
devices to directly connect to an Ethernet network. The user can then use a network
application or use Virtual COM software to simulate a virtual COM port in the PC to fetch serial
data from SE5002D remotely over Ethernet.
With SE5002D, it is possible to communicate with a remote serial device in the LAN or even in
the internet, which dramatically increases reach in distance and scalability.
